A Resolute Woman

A Victorian historical mystery set in 1890s London, A Resolute Woman follows Tabitha and Wolf into the City of London after Samuel Montagu asks them to investigate a troubling discovery in Candlewick Ward. When renovations begin at a long-closed counting house owned by Sir Samuel Montagu, workmen uncover a hidden panel containing a small family heirloom, a letter never sent, and part of an old ledger. At first, the find appears to be no more than a curious remnant of the past. Yet the letter suggests that a woman, deliberately erased from family memory, once held a lawful claim that could have altered the fortunes of several families. The ledger fragment points to money paid in secret, as though someone long ago went to great expense to keep the truth buried. Before Sir Samuel can decide what ought to be done, one of the last men able to interpret the accounts is found dead. Now, Tabitha and Wolf must follow a trail through City offices, old records, and respectable households to uncover the missing pages before they vanish forever. The secret hidden behind that panel is not merely a scandal from the past but the motive for murder in the present.
