A Tramp Abroad

Mark Twain's comic European travel narrative begins with grand ambitions: he and his companion Harris set out to become adventurous pedestrian tourers, determined to study art and German while crossing from Hamburg to Frankfurt and onward. In Frankfurt, Twain mixes practical observation with mock-serious satire, mocking the city's pride and lingering over the absurdly translated Rhine legend of "The Knave of Bergen," in which a masked black knight scandalizes a royal ball, is exposed as the Bergen executioner, and is improbably redeemed when the emperor knights him on the spot. The journey then moves to Heidelberg, where hotel ceremony, summer heat, and spectacular views of the Neckar gorge, castle, river, and Rhine valley give way to moonlit balcony vistas and legend-haunted woods. A raven's taunts lead into Twain's comic meditation on animal language and Jim Baker's theory of bluejays, followed by a hilarious tale of a jay trying to fill a house with acorns. The book also captures Heidelberg's bustling student life, from disciplined scholars and carefree bohemians to dog-loving corps members and the formal, whitewashed hall where dueling is revealed as a serious, codified ritual.
