After their mother's death in 1911, Isabel, 17, and her 15-year-old brother, Frederick, leave their Georgetown home to find their father, a college professor who joined the Mexican Revolution. Traveling by train, stagecoach, and wagon, they discover the quiet dignity of their mother's homeland.

Escaping the federales with the help of Pepe, they find refuge with a ragtag militia led by La Maestra. As war engulfs them, Isabel and Frederick must navigate a world of shifting alliances and constant danger, testing their courage and loyalty in the face of overwhelming odds.
