Adelaide is sketched here as a city obsessed with respectability, religion, and appearances, a place where public charity, rigid convention, and moral posturing mask hypocrisy, poverty, and social cruelty. With biting wit and mock-heroic flair, the narrator attacks its shabby houses, absent flats, meagre comforts, outdated tram-cars, and even the suffering of overworked horses, while exposing the indifference of wealthy shareholders and the narrowness of civic pride. Yet the satire is not purely dismissive: the Botanical Gardens, the hills, horse driving, efficient railway and post office staff, good cabmen, and the city's excellent wheat, flour, fruit, and weather all earn grudging praise. The book widens its comic assault to Adelaide's tea-rooms, galleries, boarding-houses, hotels, newspapers, sheep-shearing, horse-breeding, farming, and especially its wine industry, which is condemned as a local curse despite the quality of the fruit. Men are portrayed as conventional and interchangeable; women as constrained by gossip, fashion, and social hierarchy, though some younger women are seen as having real promise. Beneath the outrage lies a sharper social critique: limited education for girls, charity that excludes the needy, and a city whose outward propriety conceals wasted potential, provincial vanity, and a surprising, reluctant affection.
