As aristocratic resistance gathers around Thucydides, Pericles answers not with force but with a deeper identification with the people, channeling public wealth into festivals, processions, art, and civic splendor that make democracy itself glitter like a rival to private nobility. The narrative then traces Athens' tightening imperial grip, from disputes over Delphi to campaigns in Boeotia and the harsh recovery of revolting Euboea.
