Bound and facing a vera-ray interrogation, Kirk escapes only when the town's leader turns against Tauncer as the Starsong roars overhead and Orion cruisers close in. The pursuit forces Kirk and Garstang into a desperate flight through the Dragon's Throat and then into a blinding nebula, where the ship seems to guide itself through fire and dust. When they emerge, Kirk learns the nebula was never a base but a trap, and that the real struggle is only beginning. Summoned to Vega's twin city, he meets Governor Ferdias, who reveals a deeper threat tied to Solleremos and Earth—and asks Kirk what Earth truly means to him.
