Meet Steve & Barbara Uhlmann.
Steve's life was defined by plastic. An engineer at heart, he started an injection molding company that grew to more than 9,000 employees, with manufacturing plants around the world and a private jet to complete the package. Though Steve and Barbara thought they had it all, the demands of a successful business took their toll. When they retired in 2005, they were ready to enjoy their golden years with an exemplary marriage.
Then disaster struck.
In the aftermath of a severe panic attack, Barbara was diagnosed with cancer. For nearly two years, she was incapacitated. The strain of caring for her, in spite of appearances, exposed how shallow the Uhlmann relationship was. Their crisis drove them to levels of intimacy they could never have predicted.
