Delusion and Dream

Wilhelm Jensen's Gradiva begins as an elegant romance of archaeology and quickly becomes a haunting study of obsession, dream, and desire. Norbert Hanold, a wealthy young scholar cut off from ordinary social life, becomes enthralled by a bas-relief of a Roman girl he names Gradiva, "the girl splendid in walking." In the ruins of Pompeii, he meets Zoë Bertgang, whose wit, composure, and uncanny resemblance to his imagined Gradiva force him to confront the limits of illusion. As Zoë gently exposes his delusion, the novel transforms from uncanny case study into a moving exploration of memory, repression, and the possibility of human intimacy.
