A fountain and small temple deepen the sense of sacred harmony, and in a moment of revelation he comes to believe in life beyond the grave, transforming grief for Isora into hope, reverence, and a more serious philosophy centered on immortality, virtue, and truth. That spiritual awakening leads him toward the mysterious Holy Well of St. Francis, where a monk's comic chatter introduces the strange hermit who guards the shrine. The current recluse seems charitable and discreet, yet also frail and shadowed by hidden guilt. When the narrator finally meets him, the hermit confesses a past of murderous jealousy, remorse, and renunciation, then recounts how Montreuil, a manipulative priest, exploited family rivalry, inheritance, and love for Isora to inflame ambition and betrayal.
