Anne Rodway, a hardworking London needlewoman, faces poverty, uncertainty, and the painful absence of her sweetheart Robert, who has returned from America in worse condition than before. Her troubles deepen when she befriends Mary Mallinson, a fragile young woman whose despair is so severe that Anne discovers laudanum by her bedside and saves her from what may have been an overdose.
