On Marsport, a battered old man named Nibley is dismissed as a relic in a future ruled by machines, even though he can sense the paths of meteors and asteroids with uncanny precision. When a vital repair ship carrying an auxiliary computator crashes and the rocket Terra must still reach Jupiter through the dangerous Heavy Belt, his strange gift becomes the crew's last hope. Captain Kroll reluctantly lets Nibley aboard, where he clashes with the coldly skeptical Douglas and draws the attention of the suspicious Bruno. As the ship pushes into asteroid-filled space, Nibley's pride, loneliness, and fierce confidence turn volatile. Drunk and furious at being underestimated, he smashes the computator, throwing the mission into chaos and exposing a larger scheme tied to Martian industrial interests. Bruno's role in the plot is revealed, and he is killed in the struggle. Yet even wounded and exhausted, Nibley refuses defeat.
