King Leopold's Soliloquy

Mark Twain's savage satirical monologue gives King Leopold II of Belgium the rope to hang himself, as he rants against the exposure of his Congo regime while boasting of the diplomatic, religious, and humanitarian cover that helped him seize the Congo Free State. In Leopold's grandiose, self-justifying voice, Twain turns imperial propaganda inside out, revealing a private kingdom built on greed, deceit, and the language of civilization. As missionaries, consuls, reformers, and investigators publish eyewitness testimony, Leopold sneers at the evidence even as it condemns him: forced labor, starvation, massacres, mutilation, and the demand for severed hands as proof of ammunition use. Reports by observers such as British consul Roger Casement expose villages terrorized for rubber and ivory, bodies and bones scattered across the land, and a system of bureaucratic violence that treats human beings as expendable.
