Framed as the work of the eccentric historian Diedrich Knickerbocker, it mixes pseudo-scholarship, absurd philosophy, and affectionate lampooning, moving from the creation of the world to the founding of New Amsterdam and the reigns of its blustering governors. Wouter Van Twiller, "Walter the Doubter," and the domineering William the Testy anchor a parade of land feuds, frontier bravado, proclamations, and civic absurdities. The book deepens its joke through fictional newspaper notices, a mock mystery about Knickerbocker's disappearance, and an author's apology that defends the work as parody and tribute alike.
