The second story shifts to Kuzma Vassilyevitch, a timid naval officer whose careful life is overturned when he aids the distraught Emilie. Following her to a shabby, guarded household, he moves from suspicion and embarrassment to fascination as poverty, foreignness, and sudden warmth blur into intimate possibility.
