Operations of the Spirit

This book analyzes pertinent scriptures, ancient and modern, to concretize what the Holy Ghost does, how the Holy Ghost operates, and the effects one should expect when answers and decisions are enlightened by the influence of the Spirit. Common tropes--burning in the bosom, still small voice, etc.--and confusing terms are explained along with other metaphors used to capture the essence of the office of the Holy Ghost. One must read between the lines to understand what the Old Testament says about the Holy Ghost, but the New Testament's treatment is better. Modern-day scriptures do the best job, but these can still be misunderstood if not carefully parsed. Casual use of terms, confirmation bias, a proper metaphysical perspective, and understanding metaphors common in the scriptures must all be understood to grasp what it is the Holy Ghost does without interfering with one's free agency. Like a light illuminating the corners of one's mind, the Holy Ghost shines a light on what one must do to return to the presence of the Father, the ultimate goal of this life.

Although written by a devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, this is an important work for every Christian who wants a better understanding about revelation from God. What it is and what it is not.
