Pierre Grassou

Pierre Grassou's rise is a brilliantly comic study of mediocrity rewarded. Balzac begins with a savage look at the Paris Salon, where overcrowding and bad taste blur the line between genius and incompetence, then introduces Grassou, a dutiful painter from Fougères whose obscurity, caution, and respectability make him the perfect example of artistic second-rateness. Their daughter Virginie's dowry, his desire for status, and the notary's praise of his economy all push him toward respectability. A country-house visit, a gallery of false masterpieces, and the shocking discovery that many "Old Masters" are actually Grassou's own paintings sold under famous names complete the satire.
