Poppy Day

R
Rick Wilkinson

Poppy Day is a twisting tale of passion, secrets and vengeance on the Bellarine Peninsula reaching back to the dark days of WWII. George 'Jogger' Jensen, now a columnist on the weekly Bellarine Courier, is on his way to appease a reader critical of his story on redevelopment of the historic Seaview Hotel in Portarlington when he notices some premature activity at the site. Closer investigation is thwarted by members of an asbestos removal team who have already called the police. His news antenna twitching, George learns that human bones have been found hidden in the building's ceiling. The subsequent arrival of Detective Inspector Gus Mallory confirms the uncovering of a decades-old murder. Found near the scattered bones are grainy black and white photographs of uniformed soldiers, World War Two service medals and a red Flanders' poppy badge - the flower of remembrance of those who died or suffered in war. George, feisty young Courier colleague Jenny Adams and editor Fiona Catchmore become immersed in the story of a cold case that suddenly develops into a tense race to put names to the photos as the Poppy Day killer's tentacles creep into the present day.
