Precedents in Piperock

Restored Classics to Go Edition

This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design. In Piperock, a rough frontier town determined to go "safe and sane" for the Fourth of July, civic pride collides with the same hard-drinking, hard-talking mischief it is meant to replace. Sheriff Ike Harper watches locals like Scenery Sims, Dirty Shirt Jones, Magpie Simpkins, Buck Masterson, Judge Steele, and Hank Padden debate speeches, baseball, a balloon ascension, and an evening dance, all while hinting at a mysterious attraction no one quite trusts. The celebration quickly turns comic and dangerous: the balloon man's flimsy craft is sabotaged, the judge's address is interrupted by gunfire, and the airborne ride becomes a smoking disaster that leaves the town's patriotic pageantry in shreds. Even after the wreck, Piperock's chaos only changes form. Ike is pulled into a drunken, rule-bending baseball game, where he is made umpire despite barely understanding the sport. With Magpie explaining the action, players brawling over calls, Judge Steele hiding a gambling interest, and every hit, injury, and ruling sparking fresh outrage, the game becomes a frontier brawl with rules attached. Through slapstick, bluff, and irreverent humor, the story satirizes small-town reform, patriotism, and justice, ending in a whirlwind of broken promises, wounded pride, and comic disaster.
