Public and Private Life of Animals opens with a mock "Congress of Animals" in the Jardin des Plantes, where creatures from across the world gather in ceremonial outrage to demand freedom from human rule. Telling his story to his grandchildren, he recalls a childhood shattered by a brutal hunt, captivity in a royal household, humiliating tricks, and the upheaval of the July Revolution, all of which reveal human society as chaotic, cruel, and absurd. The book also follows a cunning old Lion ruler whose secretive reign, spying, and manipulation cannot prevent unrest among his subjects, until he abdicates in a calculated move that sends dissenters toward war and preserves his own power. Blending fable, parody, and political critique, the work turns animal life into a sharp mirror of monarchy, civilization, and oppression.
