Tisa Bryant

*Acclaimed community member and activist: She was the co-editor of literary journal, The Encyclopedia Project, which was a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award, and collaborates with Ernest Hardy on The Black Book series of visual mixtape love letters to black people and black culture, at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles.

*The Black feminist tradition: The author envisions Black feminist writing not as a movement, but as a continuum—one she works and lives in. She has done numerous presentations of essays, at ALOUD's "School of Prince" event at the Los Angeles Public Library, and at "Speak Nearby," a symposium of text and performance inspired by Trinh T. Minh-ha.

*Hybrid prose: The author works with scene, recollection, literary and film criticism, and memoir-adjacent prose.

*For readers of: Christina Sharpe, Dionne Brand, and Fanny Howe.

*Themes of grief and loss: The author mourns the loss of her mother, and also that of influential Black artists such as Lorraine Hansberry and Octavia E. Butler.
