On a blistering day in Burnt Creek country, old Bud, a hard-bitten storekeeper and postmaster, watches the stubborn homesteaders who keep trying to carve lives out of a merciless land. When Jim Hunter, a lean, weathered settler, arrives for supplies and mail, Bud sees him read a hopeful letter from a woman—only to crumple it in anger, hinting at a wound that still festers.
