The Communist Manifesto

Restored Classics to Go Edition

K
Karl Marx

The Communist Manifesto opens with a warning that communism is already a power feared by Europe's ruling classes, then traces history as a long struggle between classes. From ancient and feudal divisions to the modern conflict between bourgeoisie and proletariat, it shows how the bourgeoisie rose through trade, colonization, industry, and free competition to dominate the modern state, dismantling old loyalties, traditions, and feudal bonds in the process. Yet capitalism's triumph contains its own undoing: industrial growth produces crises of overproduction, concentrates wealth and power, and creates a proletariat reduced to wage labor, factory discipline, and poverty. As workers organize through unions, strikes, and shared struggle, they become a revolutionary force, joined at times by disillusioned intellectuals and members of the ruling classes. The manifesto presents communists as the clearest expression of this movement, defending communism against charges that it would abolish personal property, family, morality, or freedom, and arguing instead for the overthrow of bourgeois private property, the seizure of political power by the proletariat, and sweeping reforms such as centralized production, abolition of land ownership, and a heavy progressive tax.
