On a winter afternoon at Hampton Common, Janet is swept into a mass meeting where the fiery Syndicalist Rolfe denounces capitalism, the wage system, unions, and compromise, calling instead for direct action, strikes, and open war between workers and the capitalist class. His fierce certainty, anti-intellectual bravado, and vision of the coming "Armageddon" of labor shake Janet out of her private misery and awaken in her both political passion and a hunger for purpose. Rolfe invites her to join the Industrial Workers of the World and to come to headquarters, drawing her further into his revolutionary world even as she senses an uneasy personal charge in him. Exhilarated and confused, Janet moves between fantasy and resolve, imagining herself transformed by the cause and even by Rolfe's attention. At dawn she goes to the picket line, where the strike's harsh reality replaces rhetoric: soldiers, police, shivering workers, and the defiance of Gemma, an Italian striker who helps Janet find courage. As violence erupts around the mill, Janet sees the brutal force arrayed against the workers and feels the struggle burn deeper into her. Amid the turmoil, she also discovers a quieter hope in Insall, whose humane kindness to poor children offers a different kind of solidarity—practical, compassionate, and deeply human.
