Years later, the narrator returns to the story after a new revelation, recalling the arrival of an old woman whose warning about "oak walls" unleashes chaos, vanishing, jealousy, and the fear of murder. As love, guilt, and revenge consume him, he learns too late that Marah Leighton may have chosen despair, then discovers she is alive and has gone to France with the Urquharts.
