The Future of the Colored Race

In this work, African-Americans' premier voice in the post-emancipation era expresses his genuine fears for his people's future. Recognizing the undiminished depth of racism and the task at hand, Douglass warned that a long struggle was ahead. He also believed that one day, the status of African-Americans would improve. However, things were likely to get worse before they got better. Douglass was right on all counts.
