This volume is a follow-up to Ellen McLaughlin’s The Greek Plays, published by TCG in 2004, which has sold consistently well in the university market.
Ajax in Iraq premiered at the A.R.T. Institute for Advanced Theater Training in Cambridge, MA in October 2008.
The Oresteia premiered at Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, DC in April 2019.
Penelope premiered at Playmakers Repertory Company at UNC Chapel Hill in April 2012.
McLaughlin’s plays have received numerous national and international productions. Her other plays include Days and Nights Within, A Narrow Bed, Infinity's House, Iphigenia and Other Daughters, Tongue of a Bird, The Trojan Women, Helen, The Persians, Oedipus, and Septimus and Clarissa.
Her plays have been produced by The Public Theater; Actors Theatre of Louisville; The Intiman Theater, Seattle; Almeida Theater, London; The Mark Taper Forum, L.A.; The Oregon Shakespeare Festival; and The Guthrie Theater; among many others.
McLaughlin’s awards and honors include the Helen Merrill Award for Playwriting, Great American Play Contest, Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, the NEA, the Writer's Award from the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Fund, and the Berilla Kerr Award for playwriting. She received a TCG/Fox Residency Grant for Ajax in Iraq.
McLaughlin has taught playwriting at Barnard College since 1995. Previously, she has taught at the Breadloaf School of English, Yale School of Drama, and Princeton University, among others.
McLaughlin is also an actor, most well-known for having originated the part of the Angel in Tony Kushner's Angels in America, appearing in every U.S. production from its earliest workshops through its original Broadway run.
