The Hermetic Arcanum

The Hermetic Arcanum is a seminal work in the alchemical tradition, originally circulated under pseudonyms or without clear attribution. It is believed to be the work of French magistrate and polymath Jean d’Espagnet (1564–1637). First published in 1616 under the title Arcanum Hermeticae Philosophiae, this treatise delves into the esoteric processes of alchemy, particularly the creation of the Philosopher’s Stone. D’Espagnet, employing the pseudonym Penes Nos Unda Tagi ("The treasures of the Tagus are ours"), presents a clear and methodical exposition of alchemical operations, distinguishing it from more cryptic contemporaneous texts. It outlines the stages of alchemical transformation, emphasizing the purification and refinement of matter through spiritual and physical processes, and integrates elements of Paracelsian philosophy and Neoplatonism, proposing a unified theory of matter and spirit.
