Rector Hodder's fiery Sunday sermon condemns the age's materialism and spiritual neglect, but the words that truly unsettle him come after the service, when he meets Alison Parr, the cool, intelligent daughter of wealthy banker Eldon Parr. Drawn into Parr's grand settlement-house and chapel project, Hodder is soon trapped in a charged luncheon debate over religion, philanthropy, and the moral failure of respectable society.
