The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

The gothic stories of Washington Irviang are a landmark in the development of American literature. In the Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Irving painted a disturbing vision of a haunted Dutch settlement in New York. The headless horseman's image, a Hessian soldier, decapitated in the Revolutionary War, has remained a mainstay of horror movies and Halloween pageantry ever since.
