The Mission

Captain Frederick Marryat's The Mission; or Scenes in Africa follows Alexander Wilmot on a journey that begins as an act of filial devotion and becomes a full-scale adventure across the southern African frontier. Moved by his grand-uncle Sir Charles's lifelong grief over the lost survivors of the Grosvenor wreck, Alexander sails from Portsmouth in hopes of bringing back news that may ease the old man's sorrow. After months of peril, he returns to Cape Town and then England, where his report brings peace to Sir Charles before the old man's death.
