The Norse Discoverers of America

This study of the Norse discovery of America combines translated saga material with close critical analysis to separate legend from evidence in the Wineland narratives of Eric the Red, Leif Erikson, Gudrid, Thorvald, Thorstein, Karlsefni, and Freydis. Written as a corrective to confusion, skepticism, and poor public understanding, it argues that the Norse voyages to America are a serious historical problem still debated by scholars, not a mere tale of adventure. The author also defends the sagas themselves, presenting them as plain, historically valuable literature that should be translated in clear modern English rather than ornate imitation. The book traces Eric the Red's outlawry, his discovery and colonization of Greenland, and the later voyages to Wineland, while weaving in discussion of customs, settlement, and saga method. It also confronts modern doubts, especially Dr. Nansen's theories of fairy-tale patterning, classical and Celtic borrowing, and legendary invention. By testing names, numbers, routes, and details against the texts, the author argues for a largely realistic core, including the likely discovery of wild grapes and the historical grounding of the saga tradition.
