The Oldest Story in the World

Restored Classics to Go Edition

M
Murray Leinster

This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design. In a smoky Rangoon café, a drunken, disheveled stranger spins what he claims is the oldest story in the world: a feverish tale of cursed red gems, forbidden knowledge, and a ruined kingdom called Kosar. His account follows a fugitive white man who learns local languages and secret religious lore, seduces and abandons a dancing girl, then infiltrates Kosar disguised by the mark of Khayandra to exploit the kingdom's decaying rituals and seize the raja's rubies. But greed only deepens the trap. After stealing the jewels and murdering the ranee who trusted him, the white man flees into a second palace intrigue at Barowak, where he is lured by lust, exposed by the raja's cruel wit, and forced into a grotesque bargain in which a woman's life is set against treasure. The raja and his babu turn punishment into dark theater, invoking inquisitorial tortures and a twisted code of chivalry, while the jewels are revealed to be worthless glass. As the stranger's tale reaches its climax, a single drop of red liquid sends him into terror, as if the curse, memory, and punishment he described have finally closed around him.
