On a windswept hill after a brutal execution, thunder, darkness, and distant cries frame a stark encounter between a grieving peasant woman, a captain, and a soldier. Their uneasy dialogue exposes shock, guilt, and confusion as they confront the body of a man killed by authorities who all claimed to be "doing duty." What begins in grim practicality, even edged with dark humor, becomes a piercing meditation on obedience, power, and the moral blindness that allows violence to hide behind institutions, politics, and religion. As the captain and soldier argue over responsibility, the dead man's mother emerges as the play's emotional center. Her lament recalls the son she raised, loved, and never fully understood, revealing him as compassionate, visionary, and strangely kingly. She comes to see that the world destroyed not a rebel but a figure whose true kingdom was built on love, forgiveness, and dignity for the meek. In the end, the captain renounces empire and submits to a higher authority, even at the cost of death.
