Mutated creatures born from atomic radiation, guardians of nature that resist human exploitation, and allegorical battles that critique social and political ideologies are all characteristic of this tradition. Through these narratives, filmmakers have explored the consequences of technological progress, collective trauma, and conflict between humanity and the natural world.

This work studies kaiju cinema across a century of global production. It situates the genre within historical, political and cultural contexts, drawing from current scholarship to analyze recurring themes. By presenting a framework for interpretation, it offers readers the opportunity to critically engage with kaiju films, helping advance an understanding of the genre as a coherent and evolving form of cinema.
