In a prehistoric river valley, Tork lives by hunger, fear, and tribal rivalry until a silent silver ship from Antares passes overhead and awakens a strange eastward compulsion he cannot explain. Drawn onward by a force stronger than terror, he survives wild beasts, a serpent, and the wilderness itself, all while imagining himself a hero worthy of Berry, the sharp-eyed daughter of his rival. What begins as a quest for food, shelter, and love leads him to the grounded alien vessel and into first contact with beings who see humanity as part of an ecological experiment. The Antareans offer Tork a miraculous device that summons animals, weapons, and abundance, but their gift also plants the seeds of overpopulation, competition, and civilization's darker impulses. As Tork learns to draw the aliens to obtain more tools, human art is born almost by accident. Tribes gather, feast, and change; weapons become power, and survival begins to reshape society. Yet the experiment does not end there. Over vast ages, humanity develops metalworking, warfare, and atomic power, while the Antareans' return only to find Earth transformed by their own unintended legacy.
