Umboo, the Elephant

In a sweltering circus tent, Umboo the wise, good-natured elephant cools the gathered animals with water from his trunk and begins telling the story of his life. Monkeys, lions, camels, and other circus creatures listen as he recalls that he came from the jungles of India, not Africa like Jumbo, and that his long memory reaches back to his earliest days beside his mother. Through their playful conversation, the book contrasts the comfortless life of captivity with the freedom, danger, and wonder of the wild. Umboo's tale follows him from a protected childhood in a moving elephant herd, where the gentle leader Tusker never rushed the young, to the day hunters forced the family to flee a stripped jungle. He remembers crossing rivers on his mother's back, learning discipline and play from older elephants like Keedah, and growing strong enough to help a wagon out of the mud in circus service. But the story darkens when he is separated from his herd, wanders through rainy jungle alone, and grows more lost despite following scents, swimming rivers, and clinging to palm nuts for his mother. A kind rhinoceros offers help, but then Umboo faces a deadly snake, and the jungle audience waits breathlessly as the creature pleads for mercy.
