Valley of Night

In 1818 London, a chance discovery in St. Sepulchre’s churchyard sets retired gentleman Edward Brandonleigh on a path he never anticipated. While examining a skull unearthed by a sexton, he finds a long, rusty nail driven through the bone—a silent testimony to a murder committed seventy years earlier. Branded a cold case, the mystery of Sir Jonas Wrybrook’s death seems unsolvable until Bow Street runner Jasper Shrig takes an interest, convinced the killer is still alive.

Shrig believes the murder was motivated by greed and passion, pointing to the vanished heir, Virginia Wrybrook, a poor governess who may be the key to a vast inheritance. But when Virginia disappears after seeking the truth, Brandonleigh is drawn from his reclusive life into a web of danger that stretches from the foggy streets of London to the remote Cornish coast. With the help of the impulsive Bill Vokes, he must find Virginia before the past claims another victim.
